THE ARCH SOCIAL CLUB

In this painting, Victoria Salvano depicts the iconic Baltimore institution, The Arch Social Club. Known as a safe haven for African American musicians and artists since its founding in 1905; Victoria was inspired to paint this iconic landmark after the 2015 Baltimore Protests following the death of Freddie Gray.

Reflected in Victoria’s painting, is the mural featured on the Pennsylvania Avenue side of the club. Painted by native sons of Baltimore; Ernest Shaw, with collaborative assistance from Nether and Eric Hendricks, the mural features Billie Holiday, Ernest Shaw’s daughter Asyamelan, and author Ta-Nehisi Coates holding his son.
